“Stop Chat Control” is a demand, not a button. The rule is not one law you can repeal in an afternoon — it is a temporary regulation that was just extended, and a permanent one still being negotiated. Knowing what each is makes it clear what stopping it actually requires.
On 9 July 2026 the European Parliament voted 314 against and 276 in favour of extending Chat Control 1.0. Because a second reading needs an absolute majority to block, it passed despite more MEPs voting against than for. Voluntary scanning of content a provider can read is therefore legal in the EU until 2028.
What “stopping it” would actually mean
There are three distinct fronts, and they move on different clocks:
- Chat Control 1.0 — the current, temporary regulation that permits voluntary scanning until 2028. Stopping this means it is not renewed again when it expires.
- Chat Control 2.0 (CSAR) — the permanent regulation still under negotiation, which in its most contested form would mandate detection orders and client-side scanning. Stopping this means it is not adopted, or is adopted without mandatory scanning.
- Your own exposure — the part you control today: moving your content to services that genuinely cannot read it, so that whatever the law permits, there is nothing readable to scan.
The first two are decided in Brussels. The third is decided by you — and it is the only one that does not depend on a vote.
Where uOS stands
We are not a campaign group, and we will not pretend a product is activism. But our position is not neutral either: uOS is built so that scanning is not technically possible on our side. Every file, message and document is encrypted end-to-end on your device; the server holds only ciphertext and has no key. There is no plaintext for a detection order to reach.
That is the honest version of “stopping” Chat Control at the level we can control: not a promise not to scan, but an architecture in which there is nothing to scan. If you want to act on the political side too, the organisations below are doing that work.
